Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the performance of different sedimentation structures in trapping dust storms in Ahvaz city, Iran. Various studies show that more green space and vegetation in the areas and the creation of canals play an important role in reducing the amount of sediment and dust Methodology/Approach: Comparison of reported structures based on articles, flow mathematical formulas, and simulations, using meteorological information of Ahvaz city. Findings: Only Basaran and Erol Sediment Trap (BEST) and Eight Directional Sand Trap (EDST) had maximum efficiency in trapping dust storms, while the rest had zero or very little with respect to designated location. Research limitations/implications: Limited to Ahvaz city and the specific meteorological conditions studied. Social implications: The study can be useful for organizations and researchers involved in sediment trapping and meteorological studies, as dust storms can threaten the health of people and the ecology of regions in arid and semiarid countries.
