- Creating an image from scratch

From the
"File" menu select "New...", and set the
"Width", "Height" and "Color Mode"
fields as shown here
(take care to set the units correctly). Then click "OK".

Use the
"Page" tool to adjust the page boundary placement so that
all of the new page created in step (i) is printable. See the
Illustrator Help files for more details on this (you may need to
make the "Artboard" visible to see the boundaries).

Create your
image in the space shown, utilising the full width available.

- Modifying an existing image

From the
"File" menu select "Open". Select the file you
wish to modify, then click "Open".

From the
"File" menu, select "Document Setup...", and set
the "Height" and "Width" values as shown here.

Use the
"Page" tool to adjust the page boundary placement so that
all of the new page created in step (ii) is printable. See the
Illustrator Help files for more details on this (you may need to
make the "Artboard" visible to see the boundaries).

Rescale and
rearrange your image to fit within and make good use of the page
width available. Once the images have been sized, it is a good idea
to change the font size of any lettering to 7 point.

- Saving your image

Once the
illustration is finalised, print your image out as a final size and
quality check.

From the
"File" menu, click on "Save As...". In the
dialogue box that appears, select "Illustrator EPS" from
the "Format" drop down list, and enter a sensible name
(e.g. figure1.eps) in the "File name" box. Click
"Save".

In the
"EPS Format Options" dialogue box which appears, set the
options as shown here,
the click "OK".
NOTE:
This part will vary according
to the version of Illustrator in use. Please use the settings shown
as a guide.
