Creating a file with Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is the application of choice for editing vector images. Vector images (e.g. EPS and postscript files) are made up of lines and curves described using mathematical methods rather than individual pixels, and as such can be enlarged and reduced without loss of quality.

PLEASE NOTE
Because of software version differences and image content variation, the instructions given below should be used as a guide only.

1 - Creating an image from scratch

  1. From the "File" menu select "New...", and set the "Width", "Height" and "Color Mode" fields as shown here (take care to set the units correctly). Then click "OK".

  2. Use the "Page" tool to adjust the page boundary placement so that all of the new page created in step (i) is printable. See the Illustrator Help files for more details on this (you may need to make the "Artboard" visible to see the boundaries).

  3. Create your image in the space shown, utilising the full width available.

2 - Modifying an existing image

  1. From the "File" menu select "Open". Select the file you wish to modify, then click "Open".

  2. From the "File" menu, select "Document Setup...", and set the "Height" and "Width" values as shown here.

  3. Use the "Page" tool to adjust the page boundary placement so that all of the new page created in step (ii) is printable. See the Illustrator Help files for more details on this (you may need to make the "Artboard" visible to see the boundaries).

  4. Rescale and rearrange your image to fit within and make good use of the page width available. Once the images have been sized, it is a good idea to change the font size of any lettering to 7 point.

3 - Saving your image

  1. Once the illustration is finalised, print your image out as a final size and quality check.

  2. From the "File" menu, click on "Save As...". In the dialogue box that appears, select "Illustrator EPS" from the "Format" drop down list, and enter a sensible name (e.g. figure1.eps) in the "File name" box. Click "Save".

  3. In the "EPS Format Options" dialogue box which appears, set the options as shown here, the click "OK".

  NOTE:

This part will vary according to the version of Illustrator in use. Please use the settings shown as a guide.
